History of Washington County reveals 30 communities at the turn into the 20th Century. The map, shown on the right, reveals community names and locations in years past. A few bricks and foundations are all that remain of some former communities. A few former communities live on only through their cemetery, Memorial Day decorations and an occasional burial.

Many cemeteries, that have a church affiliation, maintain their existence through the church connection.

A few communities shown in the map exist only in memories, on vintage maps and in some outdoor photographs.

Residents, former residents, and internet geneologist will recognize some community names that have retained their identities through their cemeteries.

Some cemeteries carry township names and locations while the larger cemeteries in Washington County are associated with the twelve communities in existence.
