COMMISSION MINUTES, SEPTEMBER 29, 2008     

 

The Board of Washington County Commissioners met in regular session on Monday, September 29, 2008, in the commission room at the Washington County Courthouse.  Present:  Alison Mueller, 1st District Commissioner; Marcia Funke, 2nd District Commissioner; Gene Helms, 3rd District Commissioner, Libby Hiltgen, Assistant County Attorney and Lou Kern, County Clerk. 

 

Chairman Helms called the meeting to order with prayer.

 

Next regular meeting will be Monday, October 6, 2008 at 8:30 A.M.

 

The board spoke with Undersheriff Traci Hattesohl.  Sheriff Overbeck was not present due to illness.  Traci reported that the jail facility currently has 28 prisoners from Sedgwick County plus 2 local inmates.  CMB will be taking over the food service at the jail and will advertise for cooks in local newspapers this week.  The commission asked that the Sheriff provide regular updates through bi-weekly appointments.

 

Becky Pannbacker, Director, Washington County Senior Citizens Inc., spoke with the board and invited them to attend the retirement reception for Ruth Flagle on Sunday, October 5 from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. at the Mahaska Community Center.

 

Duane Bruna, Noxious Wed and Solid Waste Director, reported on routine maintenance matters.

 

The board spoke with Ann Hawk, County Treasurer.

 

Gloria More, Tourism Director, reported on events attended as well as upcoming events.  Gloria has recently done two telephone interviews, one for an upcoming article in the National Historic Trust newsletter and the other for Midwest Living and the Kansas Travel guide on MarCon Pies. 

 

The North Central Kansas Regional Planning Commission annual meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 28 at the Linn Legion.  Marcia Funke is serving as Chair for the organization. 

 

The board visited with Libby Hiltgen, Assistant County Attorney.

 

Francine Regan, County Appraiser, spoke with the commission regarding the letter of non compliance from PVD.

 

The board adjourned at noon for lunch and reconvened at 1:00 P.M.

 

David Willbrant, Public Works Administrator, gave weekly work report.  Bridges and equipment were discussed.  The lease purchase agreement was referred to the county attorney for review. 

 

The board spoke with Libby Hiltgen, Assistant County Attorney, and Sheila Ouellette, Communications Director, regarding a lease of the Palmer tower.  Libby Hiltgen will speak with the property owners.
