Barnes is located on Kansas Highways 9 and 148, close to the Washington-Marshall County line, near the head of North Coon Creek.
Our Beginning: In January 1876, Mr. Henry Ober erected a store building, moving the Maplewood Grange Store to
this location. The Missouri Pacific Railroad was completed to this point in the latter part of November 1876. The town was named by the railroad surveyor, A.S. Barnes. He offered a silver chalice to the first boy born in town and a white Bible to the first girl.
