Meth
The Drug
Methamphetamine The Drug:
Methamphetamine is known on the street as meth, crank, speed,
crystal, ice, and glass. The drug itself is generally in a powder
form and is usually a white or off-white to brownish color. It also
may be seen in a rock form which sometimes is almost clear, hence
the slang terms crystal, glass, and ice. Meth can be snorted,
smoked, eaten, or injected. The high associated with meth can last
for many hours and it is highly addictive. Meth breaks down a
person’s body in several ways. This is not only due to the hazardous
chemicals it is made from, but also due to a person not eating or
sleeping while under its influence.
Lab Locations: Meth labs are being found in
many places including homes, vehicles, motel rooms, storage units,
fields, abandoned houses, barns and under bridges. Typically,
criminals who manufacture meth try to make their lab in a place
where it can quickly be abandoned or not readily detected.
Lab Indicators: Some things to look for which
may indicate the presence of a meth lab include not only the
ingredients listed below, but also: the smell of chemical odors,
suspicious people around abandoned property, and people smoking
outdoors due to the volatile and flammable chemicals involved in the
manufacturing process. Meth is easily produced using readily
available ingredients which can be purchased at hardware and grocery
stores.
The ingredients include:
-
ephedrine or pseudoephedrine
-
red phosphorous
-
hydrochloric acid
-
drain cleaner
-
acetone
-
toluene

-
iodine, rock salt
- lighter

propane
-
lithium batteries
-
match sticks
An ingredient
which is not readily available to criminals, but has been found at
labs, is anhydrous ammonia. For this reason, farmers and COOPs
should be on alert to people stealing anhydrous to manufacture meth.
Some other of
the many items which are used in the process are:
- coffee
filters
-
glass cookware
-
rubber tubing
-
laboratory-type
glassware
